How is cellulitis treated?

Treatment will help to decrease symptoms, stop the infection from spreading, and cure the infection. You may need any of the following:

  • Antibiotic tablets for at least a week; in severe cases you may need to be given antibiotics straight into your blood stream (i.e. with a needle or ‘drip’), this may mean you will need to be treated in hospital.
  • Abscess drainage to help clean out the infection.
  • Mild painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
